Kind Hearted Strangers Sit with Stillness

KHSmain (1).jpg

With rich harmonies and colorful songwriting, Kind Hearted Strangers bring back a taste of American roots into the world of rock n’ roll they fell in love with. Based in Boulder, CO – the Strangers feature songwriter/vocalist Marc Townes, bassist Marshall Carlson, percussionist/vocalist Brian Ireland, and guitarist Kevin Hinder, who’s skillful and dynamic embellishments add another unique layer to the band’s raw authentic sound.

“…The fiery, eclectic Kind Hearted Strangers stand high above their counterparts, evoking a loose jam-band charm with vibrant, pop-sensible folk that takes influence from the classics without spending too much time dwelling in the past. With Townes’ vibrant, engaging songwriting, Hinder’s virtuosic and seemingly limitless range on guitar, and Ireland’s drumming that keeps the song’s contained while also stretching them to their limits, Kind Hearted Strangers’ musical dexterity far exceeds their short time as a band. With a sound already so fully-formed and grounded, guessing where they’re going next is an adventure unto itself.” – Behind the Scene Press

Marc, how has COVID-19 affected you, your band, your community?

This long period of isolation from the world of live music has given us the opportunity to sit down and create new material, to grow as artists on the creative side and to give all of our attention to the completion of our first full-length record. On a personal level, there’s been a lot of freedom to step away from the constant grind of booking, marketing, managing, and promoting events – and instead focus on the thing that actually matters the most: the music, the art. To sit with stillness – however uncomfortable it may be, with all possible emotions coming up – is a necessary part of being a human being, and even more necessary to be creative. Quarantine has been a forced opportunity to explore that stillness. This pandemic has been tragic for many communities and businesses, particularly in the world of entertainment, but I think that the music community will continue to adapt in creative ways, and ultimately be extremely supportive when we get back to playing and attending live concerts. I tend to be of the mindset that all things happen for a reason, and I think that we’re going to come out of all of this in a much better place than we ever were before. Music, art, all experiences will be more meaningful.

Tell us about the song “Red & Blue” and the music video you guys made for it.

I wrote this song on Election night 4 years ago, and while I wish the message behind it wasn’t still so relevant, it has only grown to mean more. It’s a song about division – a reflection of frustration, living and watching this country turn from the ‘United’ to the ‘Divided States’ of America. It’s a hopeful call to action – asking the People to use their voices, to speak up, because it is the only way that we can move forward. For the same reason this is our band name. This song came into existence, because All Human Beings on this Earth are Equal. From that same sentiment, we came up with the idea for the music video, to show faces of people from all across the country, from all different backgrounds. Each of us in the band comes from different corners of the country, so we reached out to our friends, family, and fans and asked them to join us in spreading this message of hope. When we would watch these divisive news programs, we would always feel that either side was a poor representation of how we as Americans, as humans, really are. The vast majority of us are good, kind, caring people. The video and the song are meant to be an example of this. That ‘We The People’ are all in this together and it’s up to all of us to make this a better place.

STONE COTTAGE STUDIOS PRESENTS LIVE PERFORMANCE WITH KIND HEARTED STRANGERS

Kind Hearted Strangers

Live Stream Concert To Take Place : By GIGSOUPMUSIC.com

Stone Cottage Studios, a Colorado-based Music Discovery Platform in support and promotion of local and visiting musicians, has announced a new addition to their live stream lineup with Kind Hearted Strangers set to take the virtual stage on January 14, 2021 (Tickets Here)Performing their new album East // West in its entirety for the first time, Kind Hearted Strangers will be celebrating the release of their first full-length album which recently hit listener’s ears on January 1st, 2021. “This long period of isolation from the world of live music has given us the opportunity to sit down and create new material, to grow as artists on the creative side and to give all of our attention to the completion of our first full-length record,” says Marc Townes of the band. “We can’t wait to share this with you and to do one of our favorite things of all – play it live!”

Originally planning to celebrate East//West with an album release show at the Boulder Theater, the band’s show was canceled due to public safety concerns relating to COVID-19. Rather than push the date, the band decided to celebrate the release with an HD Livestream at Stone Cottage Studios in Boulder – allowing friends and fans from coast to coast to watch from the safety and comfort of their homes. Stone Cottage Studios has made a tremendous effort to help local Colorado artists pivot into the digital concert world as live music has hit a wall over this past year. They are using state of the art equipment to bring a high definition concert experience to music lovers’ homes with an innovative live streaming production, featuring 1080P video and audio for the highest quality viewing experience. With the safety of the artists and staff of the utmost importance, the studio has implemented several automated camera systems to eliminate the need for actual camera personnel and take precautions to decrease the SCS staff to 2 during performances, both of which are operating behind protective barriers. “Safety is really of high importance for all,” says Jamie Maynard, founder of Stone Cottage Studios.

The Stone Cottage Studio in Boulder is literally that, and has focused its purpose on providing a great sounding, great looking space with high quality cameras and audio equipment for filmed performances.

In addition to home recording, another, arguably even more intimate, musical medium has proliferated during the pandemic. Livestreams and recorded performances have all but replaced live concerts for the time being. Drawing from this toolkit, Boulder-based Stone Cottage Studios has embarked on a mission to keep local musicians connected to their fans.

“The goals of the artist sessions are for musicians to be seen, heard and understood,” studio founder Jamie Maynard said. “It has helped local musicians reach fans more broadly, maybe even more so than touring provided earlier.”

Although Stone Cottage is a fully-equipped recording studio, the staff has focused their collective energy towards multimedia projects since its May, 2019 inception. Surviving the wave: Music instructor 'Chadzilla' adapts to virtual lessons and a year without shows

DENVER — A year and a half ago, Rocky Mountain PBS visited Swallow Hill Music teacher and performer Chad “Chadzilla” Johnson. We learned of his unique teaching style and connections with his students.

As COVID-19 creeped in and gripped the world, Swallow Hill Music had to close its in-person school program and concerts, forcing the teachers to adapt and begin teaching remotely.

Chadzilla moved his teaching location to his recording studio, 25 BPM Studios, but teaching music virtually—especially drums—is not easy.

“It's pretty hard,” Chadzilla says, “It's been a strange transition playing drums with students over the internet, and really being able to convey ideas and share practice techniques.”

But the timing is just a little off.

“If we're around 90 to 96 [beats per minute] I’m almost exactly one beat ahead of them and so it's really trained my ears to be able to hear whether we're actually playing together. I've had to learn how to live with latency,” he laughs.

Initially, the technical setup was the biggest issue.

“I think the toughest thing initially was just getting Zoom going, and for me to be able to hear,” Chadzilla says.

As a teacher, Chadzilla knows the students come first, and the struggles are worth it.

Antonio Lopez Found Roots and Wings

Antonio+Lopez+2020+promo+photo++copy+%283%29.jpg

Colorado-based singer-songwriter Antonio Lopez is releasing his latest album Roots and Wings on January 1. The album comes highly anticipated as over 300 supporters backed the funding with over $21,000. Lopez’s honest and timeless musical influences are heard throughout the album. From smooth rhythms to the artist’s welcoming voice, every track is an easy-to-consume song, but they encompass meanings deeper than one can understand upon first listen. Lopez is known for his powerful lyrics – critics have said “His words may be physically quiet, but spiritually they are louder than a riot” – (Taste Culture)

“I am a bridge builder. In a world divided, I use music as a unifying force to bridge the gap between racial, economic, and cultural divides. Music is the common ground. The meeting point. A place to both share who we are, and to put aside who we are.”— Antonio Lopez

The concept for Roots and Wings was planted in the late summer of 2018 as Antonio and his wife Georgia were flying back from their honeymoon on Vancouver Island in Canada. While there, Lopez picked up a free newspaper called The New Agora with an article about stepping into this new form of masculinity and fatherhood with a quote from Goethe that hit him in the gut. “There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children, one of these is roots, the other, wings” (The New Angora). He read these words in the airplane, flying miles above the ground. Tearing up, Lopez reminisced about his childhood and all the sacrifices his parents made in order for him to have a better life than they had.

Lopez is the youngest of five children. His mother is a retired second grade school teacher who dedicated her life to educating generations of youth. She grew up the youngest of eleven children. Lopez’s father is an activist and attorney. He and his brother Reyes became lawyers in order to amplify the voices of oppressed people during the Chicano Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s and 70’s. During this time, the FBI formed a secret branch called COINTELPRO, aimed at infiltrating and disrupting domestic social movements. They often used illegal tactics, and it is believed that these operations lead to the death of his uncle Reyes in a mysterious car bombing at Chautauqua Park in Boulder, CO in 1974. The way they tried to silence Lopez’s dad was trumping up false charges, forcing him into exile and into relinquishing his license to practice law for over ten years. He was later exonerated of all charges and gained his license back, but the shadows of those events still loom over the family.

Even though these events happened before Lopez was born, they are an important part of his story. In his own words Lopez says “I choose to share this story with you because I feel the past informs the present. However, I believe the future is not defined by the past. Each of us alive right now are the thread that connects the past with the future. It is now our time. My songs come from my ancestors. My ancestors still exist because I am here. They exist inside of me. They exist through me. Basically, I am their dream. The life that I am able to lead is a life they could only dream of having. When I sing, I’m adding my voice to their voice. Joining them in both words and actions for a better tomorrow.  A better tomorrow for me. A better tomorrow for you. A better tomorrow for ALL of us.”

Antonio Lopez will be celebrating the Roots and Wings release with Stone Cottage Studios with a livestream event on Saturday, January 9 at 7pm MT. A portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit Sound Bridge Music, an organization that empowers and uplifts local musicians. Tickets can be purchased through Stone Cottage Studios here.
